STORM History

Now in our 25th year! STORM traces its roots back to 1993 when a group of dedicated mountain bikers organized to promote safe, fun, and environmentally conscious mountain-biking oportunities in South Texas. Originally named San Antonio Mountain Bike Organization, it was soon changed to South Texas Off Road Mountain-Bikers. Since then, the club has grown from a handful of riders to over 2,800 members on our Facebook group page

That sounds nice, but what all do you do? As the oldest and leading mountain bike advocacy organization in the San Antonio area, STORM first and foremost is a mountain bike club by and for mountain bike riders. That is to say, we like to ride our bikes off road and work to increase the opportunities to do so by advocating for expanding access to local public and private park land. As an IMBA-registered club, we advocate responsible mountain biking by adopting a sustainable trail ethic along with practices that ensure the future of our sport. Through a proven history of collaboration between land managers, volunteer groups, and other local stakeholders such as businesses, private landowners, environmental organizations and community leaders, STORM's approach to advocacy and organizing is based on coaltion building amongst these various trail and parkland users.

In addition to our advocacy and trail building work, STORM maintains several programs aimed to increase the safety and enjoyment of our sport:

  • Rebel Betties

    Rebel Betties

Rebel Betties is a group for women of ALL skill levels and backgrounds, providing a safe mountain biking haven for women cyclists of the San Antonio/Central Texas area. Rebel Betties is an excellent place for ladies to discover new friendships, discuss all things bikes, advance their skills, and find out about women-specific gear. We offer regular no-drop rides and monthly skills and maintenance clinics. Stop by our Facebook page and see what we are all about!

    Trail Stewards

Unfortunately, the trails don't maintain themselves and our resource-strapped public parks departments aren't able to maintain much if any of their natural surface trails either. Fortunately, following IMBA guidelines, STORM has the tools, training and permission from the appropriate land managers to keep our trails enjoyable for all park users. Watch the calendar above for the next work day or contact our Trail Stewards to schedule a work day on your favorite trail.

    STORM Kidz

Just as in life, children are the future of our sport. STORM Kidz was created as a program to assist STORM Parents in sharing their favorite sport with the next generation of mountain bikers.
